Gardening from the Ground Up: Thursday, July 10 – 5-6:30pm

Description: New to gardening? This beginner-friendly seminar is the perfect place to dig in! Learn the basics of soil, sunlight, watering, and plant selection as you discover how to grow a healthy garden—no matter your space or experience. Whether you have a backyard, balcony, or just a few pots on a windowsill, you’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to start your own green space from the ground up.

Audience Target:
Adults and teens ages 10+. Ideal for anyone who is interested in getting into gardening or those who are having trouble with their current garden.

Format:
Classroom Lecture

Workshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand Basic Gardening Principles – Participants will learn the foundational elements of gardening, including soil health, sunlight needs, and watering techniques.
  • Identify Suitable Plants for Beginner Gardeners – Participants will explore easy-to-grow plants and how to choose them based on climate, space, and purpose.
  • Plant and Care for a Small Garden – Participants will gain hands-on experience with planting, transplanting, and basic garden maintenance.
  • Apply Sustainable Gardening Practices – Participants will learn simple, eco-friendly methods like composting, mulching, and natural pest control to support long-term garden health.

Fee:
$15, $5 for members.

Presenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018. He completed his A.A.S. in Horticulture and is currently pursuing his B.S. in Agriculture Education. He has been the project manager for several pro bono projects, specifically ones that involve Non-Profits like the C.A.R.E Clinic and St. John’s Episcopal Church. His work includes The Staff Garden at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, Community Patriot Arts Connection Veteran’s Garden, and building the Daylily Garden at Cape Fear Botanical Garden.
