SUMMARY:Nature's Skyscrapers: Understanding NC's Trees
DESCRIPTION:In the rolling hills and coastal plains of North Carolina\, our native trees are more than just scenery—they are the living infrastructure of our ecosystem. Nature’s Skyscrapers is a seminar dedicated to the giants of our landscape. We will explore the majestic canopy species that define the Tar Heel state\, from the ancient Bald Cypresses of our blackwater swamps to the towering White Oaks and Tulip Poplars of the Piedmont. \nAudience Target: Adults and teens ages 10+. Ideal for anyone who is interested in trees. \n \nFormat: Seminar \n \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes: \n\nIdentify Keystone Canopy Species: Participants will be able to distinguish between North Carolina’s primary “skyscraper” species—such as the Tulip Poplar\, Loblolly Pine\, and various Oak species—using bark patterns\, leaf shapes\, and silhouette identification.\nAnalyze Vertical Ecosystems: Attendees will be able to describe the “layer cake” of life within a mature tree\, identifying the specific wildlife—from lichens to raptors—that depend on the various levels of a tall canopy.\nEvaluate Site Suitability for Large Species: Participants will learn to calculate “critical root zones” and overhead clearance requirements to ensure a large-stature tree can reach its full genetic potential without interfering with human infrastructure.\nImplement Long-Term Preservation Strategies: Participants will master the “dos and don’ts” of mature tree care\, including the dangers of soil compaction\, the myth of the “mulch volcano\,” and how to advocate for the protection of old-growth trees in their communities.\n\nFee: $20 for non-members\, $8 for members \nLimited Availability: Please Preregister at: https://shop.capefearbg.org/SelectEvent.aspx?eventID=1000148\n \nPresenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018. He has a passion for education and loves to bring excitement and passion to the classroom. He has been the project manager for several pro bono projects\, specifically for non-profits organizations. Chad has spent the past six months developing new and exciting Horticulture Education programs for CFBG and is excited to share them with the public.
