Unlock the secrets beneath your feet in this hands-on workshop focused on understanding your soil. Participants will learn how to assess soil texture, structure, pH, and nutrient content using simple tests and tools. Discover how these factors affect plant health and growth, and gain practical tips for improving and maintaining healthy, productive soil in any garden setting. You’ll learn about the soil triangle, the jar test and how to use at home test kits. Prepare to get dirty in this workshop!

Audience Target: Ideal for anyone who is interested in getting into gardening or those who are having trouble with their current garden.

Workshop Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the basic components and types of soil (sand, silt, clay, loam) through hands-on testing.
  • Conduct simple at-home tests to evaluate soil pH and nutrient levels.
  • Explain how soil properties impact plant health and water retention.
  • Apply strategies to improve soil quality based on individual garden needs.

Fee: $20 for non-members, $15 for members.

Presenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018. He completed his A.A.S. in Horticulture and is currently pursuing his B.S. in Agriculture Education. He has been the project manager for several pro bono projects, specifically ones that involve Non-Profits like the C.A.R.E Clinic and St. John’s Episcopal Church. His work includes The Staff Garden at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, Community Patriot Arts Connection Veteran’s Garden, and building the Daylily Garden at Cape Fear Botanical Garden.
