SUMMARY:Wild North Carolina Seminar
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina is home to one of the most diverse plant populations in the United States\, spanning from the misty peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the unique “Pocosin” wetlands of the coast. Wild North Carolina is a comprehensive seminar designed to reconnect you with the natural heritage of the Tar Heel State. We will move beyond the typical manicured lawn to explore the beauty and ecological necessity of our 4\,000+ native species. Participants will learn why “planting native” is the single most effective way to restore local ecosystems. Whether you have a sprawling rural property or a small urban balcony\, this seminar provides the roadmap for creating a thriving\, low-maintenance haven that celebrates the true spirit of the North Carolina landscape. \nAudience Target: All Ages\, Parental supervision required for children under 10. Ideal for anyone looking to establish a native garden\, or for those curious about what the North Carolina wilderness has to offer. \n  \nFormat: Seminar \n  \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes: \n\nDifferentiate Between NC Ecoregions: Participants will be able to identify the unique soil\, climate\, and light characteristics of the Mountains\, Piedmont\, and Coastal Plain\, allowing them to select plants that are genetically “at home” in their specific backyard.\nEvaluate Ecosystem Services: Attendees will be able to explain the relationship between host plants and specialist pollinators\, such as the critical link between native Milkweed (Asclepias) and Monarch larvae.\nDesign for Year-Round Biodiversity: Participants will learn to construct a “habitat ladder” using canopy trees\, understory shrubs\, and perennials (like Ironweed and Aster) to provide food and shelter for wildlife through all four seasons.\nImplement Sustainable Landscaping Practices: Participants will learn techniques to reduce water consumption and chemical dependency by leveraging the natural resilience and drought tolerance of established NC native species.\n\nFee: $17 for non-members\, $5 for members. \nLimited Availability: Please Preregister at: https://shop.capefearbg.org/SelectEvent.aspx?eventID=1000145 \nPresenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018. He has a passion for education and loves to bring excitement and passion to the classroom. He has been the project manager for several pro bono projects\, specifically for non-profits organizations. Chad has spent the past six months developing new and exciting Horticulture Education programs for CFBG and is excited to share them with the public.
