SUMMARY:Homegrown & Handmade Cooking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:There is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting down to a meal where every ingredient was gathered by your own hand. Homegrown & Handmade is an immersive workshop designed to bridge the gap between the garden fork and the dinner fork. We move beyond the “how-to” of gardening to explore the “what-to-do” with your harvest. \nThis workshop is divided into two parts: first\, we dive into the horticultural secrets of growing high-flavor vegetables and aromatic herbs. Then\, we transition into the kitchen to demonstrate culinary techniques that highlight the superior texture and nutrient density of garden-fresh produce. From selecting the right heirloom seeds to mastering the art of garden-inspired seasoning\, you will learn how to cultivate a landscape that feeds both your family and your soul. \nAudience Target: All Ages\, Parental supervision required for children under 10. \nFormat: Seminar & Workshop \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes:\n* Explore “Kitchen Garden” Planning: Participants will be able to select and grow a curated collection of vegetables and & culinary anchor herbs that are specifically suited for the North Carolina climate.\n* Identify Peak Maturity for Flavor: Attendees will learn how to determine the exact moment of optimal harvest for various crops\, ensuring that the sugars and\nessential oils are at their highest concentration before they reach the kitchen.\n* Apply Herb-Centric Cooking Techniques: Participants will learn how to correctly prep and incorporate homegrown herbs into dishes\, distinguishing\nbetween “hard” herbs (like rosemary and thyme) that need heat to release flavor\, and “soft” herbs (like cilantro and mint) that should be added fresh at the finish.\n* Observe & Taste Simple Garden-to-Table Recipes: Attendees will observe a professional preparing a signature seasonal dish using their harvest\, utilizing cooking methods like quick-sauté\, roasting\, or raw preparation that preserve the integrity and color of homegrown produce\, then taste the meal prepared. \nFee: $40 for non-members\, $35 for members. \nLimited Availability. Please Preregister at: https://shop.capefearbg.org/SelectEvent.aspx?eventID=1000202 \nPresenters: April Perton (culinary) & Chad Shelby\, CFBG Horticulture Manager

SUMMARY:Advanced Propagation Techniques
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will explore how to join two different plants together to create a single\, superior specimen through grafting\, how to trick a high-reaching branch into growing roots while still attached to the mother plant via air layering\, and how to surgically separate complex root systems through advanced division. Whether you are looking to clone a rare heirloom fruit tree or revitalize a massive\, decades-old perennial\, this class provides the technical skills and biological understanding to expand your garden with precision. \nAudience Target: All Ages\, Parental supervision required for children under 10. \n  \nFormat: Workshop \n  \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes: \n\nExecute Precision Grafting Unions: Participants will learn advanced grafting techniques (such as the whip-and-tongue or cleft graft)\, demonstrating the essential alignment of the scion and rootstock cambium layers for a successful vascular bond.\n\n\nImplement Air Layering for Difficult-to-Root Species: Attendees will demonstrate the ability to “wound” a woody stem\, apply the correct hormone balance\, and create a self-contained moisture chamber using sphagnum moss and poly-wrap to induce adventitious root growth on mature branches.\n\nPerform Complex Root and Crown Divisions: Participants will be able to analyze the growth habit of clumping perennials and shrubs to determine the optimal “surgical” points for crown division\, ensuring each new section retains the necessary root-to-shoot ratio for survival.\n\n\n\n\n\nAnalyze Post-Propagation Aftercare: Attendees will learn to manage the “healing environment” including humidity control\, light levels\, and structural support required to protect new grafts and air layers during the critical period of callus formation and root establishment.\n\nFee: $20 for non-members\, $15 for members\nLimited Availability: Please Preregister at: https://shop.capefearbg.org/SelectEvent.aspx?eventID=1000144\n \nPresenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018.
