SUMMARY:Survival Craft: Building an Outdoor Shelter
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on seminar that teaches you the vital skills needed to protect yourself from the elements when modern gear isn’t an option. This course moves beyond “camping” to focus on the physics of heat retention and the engineering of emergency structures. You will learn to think like a survivalist\, evaluating your environment for the “Rule of Threes” and identifying natural resources to build a life-saving microclimate. From the iconic debris hut to advanced tarp configurations\, we will cover the construction of shelters that block wind\, shed water\, and trap body heat. Whether you are a hiker\, a back-country enthusiast\, or someone who wants to be prepared for the unexpected\, this seminar will give you the confidence to build a “home” wherever you stand. Participants will be taken to our wooded trails\, where they will be shown how to forage for the right shelter materials.  \n  \nAudience Target: Adults and teens ages 10+. Ideal for anyone interested in survival craft. \n \nFormat: Seminar & Hike \n \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes: \n\nApply Site Selection Priorities (The S.T.O.P. Method): Participants will be able to evaluate a potential shelter site for critical safety and comfort factors\, including avoiding “widowmakers” (dead hanging limbs)\, identifying natural windbreaks\, and ensuring proper drainage to prevent water pooling.\nConstruct a Thermally Efficient Debris Hut: Attendees will demonstrate the ability to engineer a ridgepole-and-rib frame and apply “squirrel-warm” levels of natural insulation (leaves\, pine needles\, or moss) to minimize heat loss through radiation and convection.\nDemonstrate Waterproofing and Thatching Techniques: Participants will learn to apply natural “shingling” methods using bark\, boughs\, or grasses\, ensuring that layers are oriented to correctly shed precipitation away from the sleeping area.\nEngineer a Thermal Ground Barrier: Attendees will be able to construct an insulated “sleeping mattress” using at least 12 inches of compressed debris or raised timber to prevent conductive heat loss\n\nFee: $40 for non-members\, $35 for members \nLimited Availability. SUMMARY:Backyard Garden Construction
DESCRIPTION:A practical seminar designed to take you from a patch of grass to a fully functional growing space. This seminar strips away the guesswork and focuses on the physical labor\, materials\, and structural decisions required to create a garden that lasts. We will walk through the entire construction process: from analyzing your yard for the best sun exposure and drainage to selecting rot-resistant building materials and installing irrigation. Whether you are building your first raised bed or setting up a “no-dig” plot\, this class provides the confidence you need to build a garden with your own two hands. \nAudience Target: Adults and teens ages 10+. Ideal for anyone looking to build their first garden\, or for gardeners looking for other methods of garden construction. \n \nFormat: Seminar & Tour \n \nWorkshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes: \n\nAnalyze Site Logistics: Participants will be able to evaluate their property to determine the optimal garden location based on solar aspect (minimum 6–8 hours of sunlight)\, proximity to a water source\, and soil drainage patterns.\n\n\n\n\nCompare and Select Building Materials: Attendees will be able to identify the pros and cons of various construction materials balancing cost\, longevity\, and environmental safety.\n\n\n\n\nDesign and Install Efficient Irrigation: Participants will be able to plan a basic drip irrigation or soaker hose system\, including how to connect to an outdoor spigot and use a mechanical timer to automate watering.\n\n\nConstruct Physical Pest Barriers: Attendees will learn how to build and attach protective structures\, such as removable “low tunnels” or trellis frames\, to defend crops against birds\, deer\, and common North Carolina insects.\n\nFee: $17 for non-members\, $5 for members \n \nPresenter:  Chad Shelby has been studying Horticulture since 2018. He has a passion for education and loves to bring excitement and passion to the classroom. He has been the project manager for several pro bono projects\, specifically for non-profit organizations.
