There is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting down to a meal where every ingredient was gathered by your own hand. Homegrown & Handmade is an immersive workshop designed to bridge the gap between the garden fork and the dinner fork. We move beyond the “how-to” of gardening to explore the “what-to-do” with your harvest.
This workshop is divided into two parts: first, we dive into the horticultural secrets of growing high-flavor vegetables and aromatic herbs. Then, we transition into the kitchen to demonstrate culinary techniques that highlight the superior texture and nutrient density of garden-fresh produce. From selecting the right heirloom seeds to mastering the art of garden-inspired seasoning, you will learn how to cultivate a landscape that feeds both your family and your soul.
Audience Target: All Ages, Parental supervision required for children under 10.
Format: Seminar & Workshop
Workshop Benefits/Learning Outcomes:
* Explore “Kitchen Garden” Planning: Participants will be able to select and grow a curated collection of vegetables and & culinary anchor herbs that are specifically suited for the North Carolina climate.
* Identify Peak Maturity for Flavor: Attendees will learn how to determine the exact moment of optimal harvest for various crops, ensuring that the sugars and
essential oils are at their highest concentration before they reach the kitchen.
* Apply Herb-Centric Cooking Techniques: Participants will learn how to correctly prep and incorporate homegrown herbs into dishes, distinguishing
between “hard” herbs (like rosemary and thyme) that need heat to release flavor, and “soft” herbs (like cilantro and mint) that should be added fresh at the finish.
* Observe & Taste Simple Garden-to-Table Recipes: Attendees will observe a professional preparing a signature seasonal dish using their harvest, utilizing cooking methods like quick-sauté, roasting, or raw preparation that preserve the integrity and color of homegrown produce, then taste the meal prepared.
